Essentials:
  If you prefer working on your own, or you can’t find an alliance that is right for you, then solo is probably the right option for you. Playing without an alliance in Bushtarion is not the handicap that it is in other games. Like everyone, solo players are able to have two Personal NAPs, and to compensate for the lack of alliance defence solo players are defended by ID 1 - The Government - when attacked by overwhelming forces. This defence is known as 'government defence' or 'anti-rape' and is discussed in more depth here

Insurance:
  Solo companies are also able to develop insurance technologies which act as compensation for when you lose men whilst defending yourself. Before being able to receive insurance at all, 'Insurance Policies' must be developed. You may then progress through more insurance policies; the further you progress the higher your insurance is. There are 3 different levels of insurance, Staff Insurance, Health Insurance, and Life Insurance.
  After you have developed an insurance policy you receive funds whenever you lose staff at home. Every time a unit is killed you will receive a percentage of the cost of that unit, the percentage you are given back is called the insurance level which can be 1.5%, 7.5%, or 14.5%, depending on how many insurance researches you have completed. It is important to remember that you are only insured when you are at home; not whilst attacking and not whilst defending your PNAPs.
  The development of insurance policies is optional. Many players think that it is more beneficial to simply keep the money you spend on insurance, and then use this saved money to buy any units that they use. The perception of insurance by these people is that it is a waste of money, because they’ll never receive as much money from insurance as they put into insuring it. However, you do not insure your house to make a profit, you insure it so that you will have some money to fall back on should the worst happen.

Pure Solo:
  If you are certain that you do not want to join an alliance then you can become a Pure Solo player by going to preferences. However should you confirm that you wish to become Pure Solo you may not join an alliance for the rest of the round unless you restart; Pure Solo is permanent.
  Due to sacrificing alliance defence for the entire round Pure Solos have been given some small advantages over normal solo players;
  * -10% on all development ETAs.
  * -1 ETA on all returning Mobs.
  * +7.5% troop experience (on top of any law and fame troop experience gains).
  * +5% Insurance (on top of any other insurance).
  * Anti-rape is easier to get at higher rankings by using a different land-valuation formula (land*land*8 instead of land*land*20), this is only for calculating whether anti-rape will be triggered, it does not affect your actual government valuation in any way.
