Im having my 18th bday party on this saturday and i need to make a "party playlist"...we've got a load of big ass speakers and are just plugging in an ipod with playlist on.

Having trouble selecting a good selection of music (and we'll need **** loads anyway)

SO...suggest some songs that you would play at a party...

More on topic, what kind of music are you looking for, or not looking for? Anything specific? :P

Yeah, what kind of music are you looking for? What atmosphere do you want?

If you want a dancy kinda bouncy atmosphere then things like, Floorfillers Club Classics, Ministry of Sound: Anthems, and various 80s/90s cheese would work for that.

If you want a chilled out, getting drunk with mates and loud music kinda thing. Then maybe some Classic Euphoria type albums, or that sort of thing, more chilled out Dance Music in other words.

If you want to have a Dancy, but more Rock Venue feel, then go for some Modern/Not so Modern Indie/Pop-Rock, etc.

Or you could go all out rock music, So things like, System, Rage, Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, etc. Which also works surprisingly well with some Drum and Bass thrown in in 10-20 min sections throughout the night, So Pendulum, Prodigy, And things like, New Order, Delirium too...

It all really depends on the atmosphere you want, and what you want the party to be!

I had to get a load of "party music" for a house party I recently had at Uni, ended up hitting some torrent sites and just searching for "Party Music". Got a couple of great albums including...
Party Party volume 5[/*:m:1acr8uvo] Ibiza Party 5[/*:m:1acr8uvo] Summer House Party 2007[/*:m:1acr8uvo] The Ultimate Party Collection[/*:m:1acr8uvo]
and some others. Just hunt on Google for a few specific party albums then just go buy/acquire them. That's what I did, and everyone seemed to like it.

As people say, it depends on your tastes. Bobbin has done a good job running through different genres, and Weeble's suggestion to go grab compilations is certainly the most hassle free. Just to throw a couple of song suggestions in, here are the first things that came into my head for various genres, with some compilation suggestions in brackets (I'm sure people will disagree both on song choice and the genres i've put them into, but it's just a rough thing). This isn't a list of my favourite songs, just the first i thought of.

Corona - Rythmn of the Night
Blackbox - Ride on Time
Grace - Not Over Yet
Livin' Joy - Dreamer
Strike - U Sure Do

Misc Anthems

BTW if you can sense te party is just about to go into dry* mode then the best song to play is Will Smith - Switch. As crazy as it sounds, it does get people back in the mood for a party and for some reason girls love to dance to this song. Believe me on this one, for once. :D :P

Hope you enjoy your party.

Destination Unknown is really ftl. Change that to Rune with Calabria.

If I were you, I'd just download some DJ-sets. I know a few places where you could get good radio-sets from DJ's, so just let me know if you're interested. :p
Armin van Buuren with his State of Trance show is pretty good if you're into the trance genre
Mylo/Dave Pearce/Pete Tong are the more pop-dance music that is easy to listen to to chill out, but also get some more active party going (although I'd prefer Armin for that, but that's just me).

Let's see.... some of my faves (for dancing to... so more "club" feel)

Timberland: The Way I Are
Soulja Boy: Crank That (Yes, I know the meaning, but it reminds me of a very fun (and innocent) paintball night!)
Britney Spears: Gimme More
Britney Spears: Piece of Me
One Republic: Stop and Stare
H20: What's it Gonna Be
BassHunter: Now You're Gone
Taio Cruz Ft Luciana: Come On Girl
Rihanna: Please Don't Stop the Music
One Night Only: Just For Tonight

"Older" / Cheesey stuff:
5ive: If Ya Gettin' Down
5ive: Got the Feeling
Backstreet Boys: Backstreet's Back
Sugarbabes: Push the Button
Sugarbabes: The Way I Feel about you now
Aerosmith: I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing (Maybe towards the end of the night!)
The Killers: Mr Brightside
Louis Venga: Mambo No. 5 (Failing that, the Bob the Builder Version :D)
Queen: Don't Stop Me Now (Classic :D)
The Dandy Warhols: Bohemian Like You
Amy Winehouse: Valerie
Destiny's Child: Bootylicious
Fall Out Boy: Dance Dance
Feeder: Buck Rogers
The Foundations: Build Me Up Buttercup
Franz Ferdinand: Do You Want To
Kaiser Chiefs: I Predict a Riot
Leanne Rimes: Can't Fight the Moonlight
TopLoader: Dancing in the Moonlight
Lostprophets: Last Train Home
Maroon 5: This Love
McFly: Obviously
Busted: Crashed the Wedding
Busted: What I Go to School For
O-town: The Joint
OutKast: Ms Jackson
Sisqo: Thong Song
Scouting For Girls: Elvis isn't Dead

More of a "rocky" feel:
Foo Fighters: All My Life
Muse: Plug-in Baby
My Chemical Romance: I'm (Not) OK
Nickelback: Rockstar
Panic! At the Disco: I write Sins, not Tragedies
Red Hot Chilli Peppers: By the Way
Stereophonics: Superman
Stereophonics: Dakota
Stereophonics: The Bartender and the Thieve
Blink 182: The Rock Show

I could go on...
Personally, I don't like it when the bass is louder than the song. Fortunaely, where I live doesn't do that:

And now, cos you all dislike what Music I've started liking... if it was a more relaxed / houseparty feel:
All American Rejects
HelloGoodbye
Lostprophets
My Chemical Romance
Muse
(Some) Stereophonics
(Some) Red Hot Chillis

Erm, yea :D

Lol... I've been playing music to TONS of parties and no matter how new, how classic, how quality sounding tracks you are playing there is ABSOLUTELY no way to satisfy everyone, if the crowd you are gathering is random that is (ie not people who have gathered because they have the same taste for music).

There have been a lot of good songs suggested here, from quite a ranging variety of genders, I would really suggest to switch genders each 20 minutes, this is the closest you can get to "satisfying" a crowd.

I have gotten used to listen to everything that is good, everything meaning every gender out there, from classic symphonies to prodigy. Everything except metal perhaps (excluding ballads).
