View Full Version : Green Street Hooligans
It's a movie with Elijah wood and other good actors. It's about football firm/gangs in the U.K.
Just wanting to know if anyone from the U.K knows if this really happens? I find it interesting.

Well i've not seen the film but...
The 'heyday' of English football hooliganism was the 1980s. These days there are a few sporadic groups of thugs going around talking themselves up but they're largely derided and the scene is nothing on the level that it was 20 years ago.
Back in the 80s England was the black sheep of European football, thrown out of all cup competitions as a result of large-scale hooliganism. These days there are significant hooligan problems in other European countries, worsened by their inept police forces, but little seems to be done about it. Italy, for example, has seen deaths and large scale riots between hooligans and police this year.

Just me that thinks it's morally irresponsible to glorify these scumbags, I guess?

Erm, no?

The movie puts out the message that the things these 'scumbags' do is morally wrong. However it does show certain positives about what they do, as in standing your ground, never bailing on mates etc. And I believe it's based, not completely but partly on what actually went on?

also the original english version is called green street elite. like many films they change the name us-uk. I think this is a terrific film. but no idea about if its based on true accounts or not. but its believable. I would have thought if it was at the begining they would say "based on a true story" i guess google/wiki it?
also(slightly off topic but related) i was told the film "snatch" in america has subtitles for when mikey (brad pitt) speaks. is this true?
if it is true do you find as an american you need the subtitles to understand what he's saying? sorry if its a little off topic. but saves creating a new thread.

i have a copy of that film. there is an option for subtitles but it is just for the whole movie, every word spoken is subtitled. i was able to understand what he spoke although a few of his buddies were hard to decipher :). a well done movie, loved it.
people over in england might not like guy ritchie movies???, but here in the states, they are a breath of fresh air from the garbage hollywood spews out. always like the dialog in them ritchie movies.
i liked green street hooligans too, though i am not found of e. wood. he did alright though. i could see that stuff happening during the heydays of rival football clubs. it was believable..

I live near, and support Newcastle. Organised fights between rival supporters is well known, however they are the minority. I wouldnt fancy going to Sunderland on a derby match day wearing my black and white. Actually I wouldnt fancy going to Sunderland in the first place
anyway here's a couple of googled links, I was looking for a particular article but cant find it.
