Alright so over christmas night i left my computer online as i always do and i wake up in the morning and go to refresh bushtarion and it goes to page can not be displayed which it also does a lot, so i did what i normaly do. unplug the modem and plug it back in so it restarts the modem and fixes the internet on the computer...this time it didn't which has happened a few times so i disconnected all the eathernet cords from my modem and router, shut down the computer, and unplugged the computer... redid it all and plugged it all back in to no avail... so i thought maybe roadrunner (my ISP(Cable)) was down but it wasn't, because it works on my dads laptop and my ps3 (hence me being on atm) so i've came to the conclusion that the little internet port in the back of my tower is f'ed up or something any suggestions as to what i should do or anything else i should chack for you to get you more information so that you can help me better. thanks as always

So your PC cant connect to internet while laptop and PS3 can right?
Could you start by telling us what system your running? XP? Vista? Linux?
Would help a lot.

Basicly start by checking if your computer gets IP address at all.
If no then theres something wrong in network setting or something is really broken.
If yes then check DNS servers... do ping to url and see if it gets translated to IP.
After this tell us what you did / didnt notice :P

Davis,

Network cards are generally very versatile pieces of hardware and as such the chances of it being damaged, unless you know yourself or someone to have physically damaged it somehow, are very low.

The chances are the problem lies with XP rather than anywhere else. It seems you've already gone through all the basics of checking ethernet cables/restarting your computer etc so I'll not bore you with that stuff.

-

Open the command prompt -> (Start Menu,, Run,, type "cmd" then hit enter) the command prompt interface will open. Type the command "ping http://www.bbc.co.uk" - then hit enter. If you don't get a response it means your computer has no connection to the internet. (Before this test you only knew your browser can't connect, which may have been a firewall issue)

If you can't get a connection:

Start your computer up with everything plugged in. Go to the Start Menu and hit My Network Places then on the left hand nav bar hit network connections (alt route control panel -> network connections)

There should be just one icon in the window that has just appeared, this is your Local Area Connection and it represents the connection made through your network card. (Please make a note of the status shown with this icon (i.e connected/disconnected).

Click this icon and click disable, then use the DELete key to remove it. Restart your computer.

This will basically force windows to start from scratch with your local area connection. Sorts this kind of problem now and again.

-

Other things to try:

If you have a firewall, uninstall it and try accessing the internet. Data corruption can cause firewalls to malfunction.

Reset your router completely. There should be a manual reset switch that returns your router's settings to its factory configuration. Check with your dad before you do this as he may have complex configurations arranged on the router (though chances are he won't have).

-

Lemme know how the above goes.

Hmm I'm not sure what I did but I did the cmd prompt and then realized my modem wasn't connected (my dad RECENTLY took it from the computer seeing as there was no use for it :P) so I reconnected it and after waiting for awhile for it to boot up it said there was limited to no connection and one of those send error report things popped up and I hit debug, and it said error and restarted my computer and now my internet works :) I'm not sure if it had to do with some of the stuff you said or not but thanks for all the help :) this is why I love bushtarion community :D

alright, im back again with the same problem :/ exact same things, i turned off my computer, plugged everything in let it all set up then turned my computer back on, it says connected on the icon.
"Status: Connected
Duration: 00:02:50
Speed: 100.0 Mbps
Activity
Packets Sent: 96
Packets Received: 0"
"Address Type: Manually Configured
IP Address: ***.***.*.* (i stared them out because im not sure what info i should and shouldn't give.)
Subnet Mask: ***.***.***.*
Default Gateway: "(theres nothing after default gateway)
If, I click Repair, it does a few things, and then says
"Windows finished repairing your connection. You can try connecting again.
If the problem persists, contact the person who manages your network."

just a lot of info that im not sure is needed or not but my time is limited so im giving as much as possible.

I did the whole, ping, thing, and it says" Ping request could not find host http://www.bbc.co.uk. Please check the name and try again"
I also tried the whole disableing and deleteing it but got this message
"Error Deleting Connection
The Connection you selected cannot be deleted.
OK"

so thats basically where I'm stuck at right now. yet again, the internet on my computer doesn't work, but my dads laptop, my ps3 and my xbox live DO work... should i take my computer downtown to the repair shop and see if there is something wrong with it that they can help or is there something else i could try frist? thanks in advanced

Try changing your IP and DNS servers so they're configured automatically instead of manually.

Edit: To do that:
-> Start
-> Control Panel
-> Network Connections
-> Right click your LAN connection and click properties
-> Double click "Internet Protocol"
-> Select obtain IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically

The problem you mentioned was basicly that your network card was not connected to anything.
If you have only IP and host mask under connection its same as cable would be plugged only to another computer or router (without NAT on). That IP address and hostmask were only what windows gave to you automatically. And you always should give us your IP if you require help. We cant harm you by knowing your IP really. Instead it can be great help. You can check peoples IPs on irc by /dns nick and yet we are there.
If there would be router, modem etc or those would be connected to anything you would have received at least default gateway.
